Soooo, I now that I only rebranded back in July last year, however, since all of the goings on at the conclusion of last year and the loss of my artwork on my now defunct HDD, as well as the complete wiping of my website (thanks so much for that Chinese Hackers!), I feel that it is a great time to take along hard look at what Love Bytes is about.

I have decided this year to accept some of the wedding enquiries that I have been receiving and am looking forward to the 7 weddings that I already have booked for this 2012.

As a result, guys and gals, I have something exciting to share with you today! You may remember the beautiful love heart shaped leaf that I posted an image of on Facebook the other day? It is here, just in case you missed it:

Some of you may also remember me having some discussions about rebranding Love Bytes on account of expanding to encompass wedding work this year?

Well, the deal is done! I have designed another logo to go along with my gorgeous new website and to take Love Bytes into the direction that my photography has been evolving. In short, Love Bytes has grown up a little. The love heart leaf represents a lot of things about me personally, my name being “love”, my hopes and dreams for our planet, and respect for Mother Nature, and general feeling of “earthiness” that is a part of my personality. It is also quite precious as my kids have really taken to the “theme” and have been bringing me every leaf that remotely looks like a loveheart over previous weeks!

I have chosen to stay with my black, white and red theme, and a clean, modern look, but softened it a little to include the loveheart leaf, and a gentler, handwritten font. I think that the new look works well for both my children/families and weddings combined. It is still fun and fresh, but a little more refined.

What do you guys think?!

Ok, so we had our ups and downs this past year, mostly downs, but let’s not focus on those! Instead, lets look forward to a busy and beautiful 2012!

To kick things off, I am working on a brand new website, the beginnings of which you are viewing right now! Thanks to remorseless Chinese hacking bots that keep attacking this site, we have lost what was once known as the Love Bytes little corner of the web. All is not lost though, I have decided to “keep on truckin’” and onto bigger and better things. A new look for a new year! This site will be evolving over coming months as I add new content and tweaks and galleries and lots of fun bits and pieces, so stay tuned. At the moment, I have managed to restore all of my old blog posts, but not the “uploads” folder containing the images, so things are looking a wee bit bare right now, but I will be plugging along and fixing what I can asap.

As well as this, I am taking a slightly different direction this year. I have finally decided to cave in to pressure (lol!), and accept a small number of wedding bookings this year. I say “cave in” as I once swore that I would never shoot a wedding again after suffering from severe burn-out back in the day of shooting and editing 3 weddings every week. Sure the money was nice but *I* was not a nice mummy/wife and promised my family that I would “never go back there”.

As such, I am going to be a bit of a diva. A select number of weddings, on my terms, my way. No stress, no ego, no hard sell, no wedding expos. Just me and my camera, some beautiful images and exquisite products and (hopefully) lots of yummy wedding cake!

Kinda appropriate now that I think about it that we are called “Love Bytes” these days, isn’t it?

Ok, so here’s a sampling from two weddings that I shot in November, and which reignited my passion for all things luuuurv… These two weddings couldn’t have been more different, but both were absolutely wonderful!

Ok, so it has been a looooong time since I posted! I know this, but there is a good reason. Well, a couple really.

1. This entire website was hacked, and vaporised a couple of months back. It took about 4 weeks of frustrating forehead-bashing-against-a-brickwall to and froing with my web host before they finally managed to restore it. It is only still *barely* here, lots of stuff is missing, but thankfully, all of my blog posts were saved, and this is the most important thing!

2. Following on from what will forever be known as “The Love Bytes Hacking Incident of 2011″, I began to build a new site. I have been reticent to post on the blog since as I wanted my next post to be a “big reveal” of the new site. But of course, as per my usual mantra, there aren’t enough hours in the day, and I STILL don’t have it ready to go, and at the risk of all of my lovely subscribers disappearing into oblivion, I thought it was about time that I at least came by and said Hi! And, I promise that yes, a new fancy, schmancy, hacker-proof (well, hopefully), site is on its way!

3. Reason number 3, my perpetual moan/whinge – there just isn’t enough of me to go around!

BUT, I have a STACK of editing that I am working on right now, and some gorgeous sneak peeks that will be going up on the blog in coming days, so I thought I’d better get my butt into gear and start posting again!

Christmas is creeping up, yet again, and I have some special mini-shoots planned for my SEQ clients that I will post about shortly too, but until then, here is a beautiful little family that I photographed a couple of weeks ago and who I will be sharing more of in coming days…

Following on from my last post about my direction, and evolving style as a photographer, I have been thinking more and more about this.

I have come to the following conclusion. Rather than labeling myself as having a definite “style” for capturing the children and families that I photograph, I think that my “style” is to shoot colour, form, composition, styling, lighting etc as dictated by the personalities of those I am photographing. My “style” is actually YOUR style.

There was a time when I heavily styled and themed all of my shoots, and I still love to do this and play “dress ups” when I can. However, I no longer feel that I need a gimmick to produce my collections. Instead, within moments of physically meeting a family, I can usually tell what their expectations are from a shoot that we do together and the kind of images that they would like to have in their collection. If I style or theme shoots these days it is for a good reason – because of a request from the family, or because the chosen theme has an important meaning to the family/child that I am photographing.

Rather than thinking of the final “look” of the images, I find myself more and more, wanting to do the family/child justice by showing who they “really” are – their spirit, their personality, their loves, their vulnerabilities. I want to show them as they are at that particular point in time so that when the parents look back on our session together they can say “oh, yes, remember how she used to love doing that”, or “I remember that sad face he used to give me”.

This is also the reason that I am starting to, more and more, incorporate video and fusion into my shoots. More on this in coming months as I perfect the product that I am getting very excited to offer!

As such, and in light of the fact that I now have a quirky new studio that I am about to go public with, I have decided to do a spot of re-branding for Love Bytes. I have redesigned the logo, to reflect my stronger identity and cleaner way of thinking and shooting. I am keeping the infamous polka dots (to come out on “special occasions” ), but throwing away the lollies which I have outgrown and which I think are a bit too gimmicky for what I want Love Bytes to be about. Of course, all of my orders will still come with lollies, that is my trade mark, and besides, I’d get hungry without a huge stash next to me as I work.

I have made some some changes to the website and will tweak it more as I go along, to reflect the new branding and the look/feel of our new studio too. And so, without further ado, I’d like to unveil the new Love Bytes logo, drum roll please….

So, it is cleaner, but it is still bold, and vibrant, and in keeping with the quirkiness that is Love Bytes. It is still red, black and white, and I will add/use polka dots when/where ever I see fit (hehe!), but, the most important thing to me about the new logo is that it is less ME, and more YOU.

As I mentioned in my last post, it is my ability to connect with you and your kids that I think is my “talent” (if any!), and it is this that I am going to work to capture as my top priority for all of my clients from now on in. It is for this reason that I have now added my very special little tag line to the bottom of our new logo, and I would love for you all to think about it for a few moments. It truly encompasses everything that Love Bytes and me, as a photographer is about at this point in time…

….because a child’s true beauty can only be seen with the heart.

What do you guys all think?

Hmmmm, it’s been ages. I know it. I’ve been busy. After so few posts of late, if you are reading this, you are probably one of about three people to do so, me being one of them, so you are in great company.:)

I have so much to tell. This post may turn into a big rambling jumble of stuff that doesn’t make much sense, as is the nature of my head. But, I have heaps to say….

This year has been SO crazy, and unless you have lived in SE QLD during the first half of this year, it is impossible to comprehend one bit. And, if you haven’t run in my circles and been privy to all of the energy that I have put into The Constellations Project for the past 6 months, then it is even more difficult to understand. But lets, just say, it has been a momentous year thus far, and one that my family and I will not forget in a hurry.

Now that things are *kinda* returning to normal, and I have had the opportunity to finally put some energy back into my “real” life and of course Love Bytes, I have felt a huge evolution happening within me. This year, I joined the AIPP. I think it has turned out to be perhaps, the most important thing I could have done for me as a photographer, and as a result, for my family too. Putting aside the workshops, the awards, the intensive learning curve, the amazing resources offered, the FANTASTIC new “family” and network that I am now privy to, and putting aside the new connections with like-minded people who possess talent that constantly blows me away, I have been so fortunate to discover another benefit from the AIPP. That of creativity.

As a mum of five kids under 13, I rarely have time to myself, and when I do, and I choose to do something “for” myself, I am wracked with the guilt of how self-indulgent this is. Finances are always a big struggle too. That goes without saying. Particularly to those of you who shared with us the heartbreaking experience that was the demise of our beloved Ankle Biters, back in 2009, you would really understand what I am referring to here. So, with the AIPP, has come the opportunity to spend some of this “self-indulgent” time for/on myself, attending workshops/events, whilst also developing myself professionally. I don’t feel *quite* so guilty doing this. To some who attend these events, they appear to be routine and a chore. However, to me, I adore every minute of them. To be a part of a place and time dedicated to doing nothing but fostering creativity is an amazing gift for me, and one that I do not take lightly.

Whenever I attend an AIPP event, I return home, overflowing with ideas and motivation, and creativity! I am not a naturally creative person. I actually have to make a deliberate decision to “think” creatively. “Tan, come on, think outside the square here”, “Tan, you can do better than that, come up with something cool”, “Tan, that is nothing more than average, where is the wow factor?!” etc. Welcome to my head.

Truth is, that I quit photography to start Ankle Biters in 2006 because I felt that the weddings I was shooting at the time were becoming stale. I was burned out true, but I just couldn’t seem to fire up the creativity either. To be honest, I returned to photography full-time in at the end of 2009, for no other reason than because I “knew I could make money at it”, and after the Ankle Biters debacle, money was pretty much all we could think about at the time.

I’ve never *really* considered myself to actually be “much” of a photographer. I know that the technical stuff doesn’t come naturally to me, I am just not that way inclined. I have to really, consciously put my head into something when I decide that I need to learn it, or to overcome an obstacle, and it usually takes some time for the “penny to drop”.

I have always maintained that my “talent”, if any, is working with colour. My ability to see and manipulate colour has always seemed to me to be my point of difference. Well, that and my “gift of the gab”. It is true, that for some reason, people seem at ease with me. I know, my husband doesn’t get it either.

When I returned to photography, I had a young baby, a toddler and three older kids, all under 10 at the time. My world WAS children. So, it seemed natural to me to return a child photographer. My nerves are no longer up to weddings, I’ll leave that to the young hot shots whose egos can handle the battering that comes with the industry. Through Ankle Biters, I had an awesome business network available to me, especially as a result of my association with Connect2Mums. It opened immediate doors for me, I am so fortunate and grateful for this, and I pretty much immediately had a great clientele at hand. I styled my shoots heavily, and themed them too. There is nothing like a good themed/styled shoot! I used A LOT of colour, this is, afterall, my talent – well so I thought. And things have been building nicely.

Then, comes along 2011. Talk about a spanner in the works!! For the first 5 months of the year, I basically cancelled every booking and let my paid work fall to the wayside as my heart went out to the flood affected families of The Lockyer Valley. I spent weeks and weeks out at Grantham, photographing and collating stories, and forging some wonderful, and hopefully lifelong friendships as I tried to help. It felt as though I was always destined to do this, as though everything in my life had been leading me to this point.

So, I designed this calendar, and I did a pretty nice job I reckon. The photography itself, isn’t anything revolutionary, but it tells their story in a way that I am proud of. Sadly, they haven’t sold many of the 14,000 that I had printed, but that’s another story. I still feel as though somehow, through my work out there, I have help people to summon the courage and resilience required to continue their lives after such a tragedy, and this alone makes it all worthwhile.

Wow, I did warn that this may end up as one big rambling post didn’t I?!

Through The Constellations Project, I have spent hundreds of hours driving too, giving me a lot of time for self examination. It also has meant that yet again, our family has had to struggle through a financial situation that is beyond tough. I haven’t had any kind of income for about 5 months, kinda makes it hard to feed 7 mouths, you know? Again, very self-indulgent on my behalf, but I think important life lessons to learn for my family, and a good example to set for them to be empathetic and socially conscious. So my “self examination” has brought me to a bit of a cross roads, and I have made some discoveries (and revolutions!) about myself that I had not expected.

1. I NEED to make a decent wage for my family. I can no longer charge below industry standard rates, and justify it by saying things like “It will be worth it as they might refer people to me”. My time as a mother is much too valuable, and my kids don’t deserve to miss out on “me” when we can’t afford to pay our bills.

2. I cannot make said “decent wage” if I am not offering a professional level service. I have been failing my clients and providing poor customer service this year due to being over committed to The Constellations Project. This must change.

3. I *think* I am actually a better photographer than I gave myself credit for, although, I am still trying to convince myself of this. Happy to wear the “tortured artist” tag until I come to some final conclusion here.

4. I might be “pretty good” at working with colour, and I might have the “gift of the gab”, but my *talent* is not here. Well, it *kind of* is, but it is a little more refined than this. See below.

5. I chose to return to photography as a children’s photographer because my world at the time revolved around children. It is kind of ironic that I always maintained that I was “SO not maternal” and that I “disliked other people’s kids”, as the BIG discovery I made about myself is that I ADORE kids. I mean I REALLY do love them. And this brings me to what I believe is my *real* talent. It goes beyond the “gift of the gab” or “making people feel at ease”. It is about CONNECTING, and more specifically, CONNECTING with children.

This year has taught me that when I am present, truly, really present, with a child, I am able to forge a genuine, heartfelt connection within seconds. It is a mutual thing. They seem to love me as much as I love them. I use the term “manipulate” a lot when I am discussing a photo shoot with a parent. I say “its a game of manipulation”, but “in a nice way”. Simply put, I am REALLY good at getting into the heads of the kids that I work with, and I cannot remember the last time that I left a shoot without goosebumps, or a tug of the heartstrings, or a tear in my eye, when I think of just how beautiful that child was – to the core.

There it is, the honest truth. I am not such a great technical photographer. I know that I couldn’t shoot a beautiful landscape image to save myself. I am not amazingly talented at Photoshop or post-production, but I am working on building those skills. I know that I can talk underwater, and usually feel confident when meeting new clients. I know that I am pretty good at working with colour. I am ok at styling too, but I could be better. Posing – well, not my strong point either, but again, working on that too.

However, I ROCK at loving and connecting with kids. There, I said it. (And I gave myself goose bumps typing it!).

As a result of this epiphany, I have made some decisions that I think will not only benefit Love Bytes, and my family as a result, but my clients too. And those are:

1. I am no longer going to actively pursue newborn photography. The clucky side of me loves them, but I am not that great at them, and struggle creatively on newborn shoots to come up with fresh stuff that hasn’t already been done over and over. I feel that by simply redoing shots that I know work, I am not providing the best service to my clients. Each and every one of you deserve something unique and amazing. (Ironically, it was this newborn image that won me my first ever Silver Distinction at this years APPAs last month).

2. I am REALLY enjoying family shoots, which I used to loathe! I find them a challenge, but a fun one, and watch out next year’s APPAs I am going to be shooting to win! (that is the one bit of ego I will allow to be seen, and really hope I don’t end up with egg on my face for showing it!).

3. I am LOVING shooting at a much more grass roots level with the kids I am photographing of late. Less gimmicks, more emotion, more personality, MUCH more of a true connection.

4. I am now aiming to not work 18 hours per day for no profit, and instead have priced my services at industry standard, in the hope that others agree.

5. I will NOT be referring to myself with the pretentious label of “artist” or referring to my session fee as an “investment” on my website. I am ME, I will be ME, on all levels, and if my clients like it, hopefully they will spread the word. If they don’t, then lets hope they don’t have a lot of Facebook friends.

I really love the AIPP’s policy of referring to the creator of an image as the “author”. I like to think of myself like this. I only hope that I can remain true to myself in this respect and that rather than trying to “sell” images, or my business, I can be an “author” and tell the story of a child at that moment in time. To show the viewer the real connection I have made with them, and to illicit expressions that are genuinely from their heart and which illustrate the beautiful spirit that they have inside.

I expect that the look of my images may change a bit as I further develop this side of myself. I really feel that I have finally “found my groove”. There are so many beautiful kids in my part of the world, I can’t wait to share them with you. Images that aren’t beautiful because of props or clothing, but rather because of emotion, and personality, and honesty.

Here are some shots I have captured in the past month. They are a true representation of who I am now, and the connections I have made with some very special little people. They have their technical faults, but I am ok with that. I think. Because to me, each of these kids, and therefore the photo, is just perfect.

I know this and I apologise! My poor little Love Bytes blog has been SEVERELY neglected as my life has been consumed by the work I have been doing for The Constellations Project and the flood affected families of The Lockyer Valley.

BUT, things are slowly slowing down and I am beginning to get a grip on our “normal” life once again.

This past fortnight, I have even managed to fit in a couple of client sessions and it feels so great to be “back on the horse”! I have a lot of great plans for new offerings from Love Bytes, and so now I would like to share some of that with you.

This is Archer, and his Mummy and Daddy. They are the most beautiful family in the world. I’m allowed to say that because I have spent a lot of time with them! Later in the year, I will also be photographing Archer’s Mummy and Daddy’s wedding. I just CANNOT wait!

Welcome Earthside little man, and congratulations to the newest, most loving parents I know!

Well, this beautiful client of mine does not have that problem, her baby is almost kicking its way out! SUCH an active little thing.

We photographed her last weekend, and what started as a fairly short session ended with me arriving home at 9pm after we got locked out of their house and had to smash a window to get back in! It was ok though, made for some laughs that’s for sure!

Here’s a couple of my favourite shots from our session:

And here we are trying to break back into the house! lol….

It has been a tough, and strange start to the year. I began it with a huge backlog of editing waiting for completion on account of all of my interstate trips at the end of last year. I had planned on spending the entire Christmas break and month of January before school returned completing said editing. I hadn’t, of course, factored in the floods.

So, as I have had my attention diverted to the beautiful project that I am working on for the families of the Lockyer Valley (see it here: www.theconstellationsproject.com.au), my editing/productivity has definitely suffered. I am, however, so very thankful to have the most amazing clients in the world and have not met with even the slightest complaint about the extended waiting periods that they have faced. The Constellations Project is SO time critical. It simply MUST be completed by the end of February or there is little chance of it succeeding. My wonderful clients have all acknowledged this and accepted that the wait times that they are enduring are their contributions to helping these families get back on their feet. I thank-you all, from the bottom of my heart for being so understanding.

My trips to Grantham are becoming less frequent now, and I am finally managing to push through some of my “normal” work too. As such, I’d like to share with you these shots of little Olivia that we captured during my trip to Perth in December. A more beautiful little girl I have never met, and the adoration in the eyes of her Mummy and her Grandma were so obvious to me when they were looking at her. I am sure that you can see why…

…BUT, I’ve been SUPER busy (I know, I say THAT too often too!).

The whole flood thing has kind of taken over everybody’s lives and it has certainly been a crazy start to the New Year. We now find ourselves faced with Category 5 cyclones, heartbreaking bushfires and MORE flooding through-out other states in Australia. Mother Nature has surely unleashed her rath on us, and I think it is a lesson to be learned from.

All of that aside though, I do offer all of my clients who are currently waiting on editing from me a sincere apology for the extended delays. It is extremely out of character for me, and I am doing my best to knock everything over that needs to be done, but on the back of the floods, my new project must take top priority right now. This is because it is such a time critical thing. I am producing a 16 month calendar featuring the community of Grantham in the Lockyer Valley and if I don’t get it completed in the next 2-3 weeks, we run the risk of not reaching the $400,000 fundraising target that I have set for us. As such, whlst I am still pushing through as much of my backlog as possible, I am finding myself forced to give undivided attention to the project several times a day, making me much less efficient than usual.

Second to this, we are still needing additional sponsorship to ensure that the printing costs of the project are met. You can read all about it here: http://www.lovebytes.com.au/files/sponsorshipproposal.pdf Please feel free to share this link/document with as many people as you can in order to help us get the interest/exposure that we need.

You can also keep up to date on all happenings with the project right here: http://www.theconstellationsproject.com.au and here: http://www.facebook.com/TheConstellationsProject

I am so passionate about this and I KNOW that we can achieve something great here, we just need to spread the word!

On a completely different topic, I spent this past weekend at the annual Hair Of The Dog event run by the Queensland chapter of the AIPP. It was a MAGICAL weekend. I sincerely believe that there will be MANY photographers moving in different directions this year as a direct influence of the presentations that we witnessed. There were MANY tears, and I am motivated and encouraged to know that I am a part of such a beautiful community (all egos aside here! lol.). For you, as my clients/followers of Love Bytes, it will be a wonderful year too. I will be putting in place many changes, all designed to offer you a much better service than you are receiving from a currently very stretched, very busy and very worn-out l’il ole me, and to allow my family to enjoy each other the way that we should be doing. My babies won’t be little for long and I will mourn the day that I discover that they have grown up with me at a computer and not noticing their milestones.

So, it is all about to change, for the better! I can’t wait to open the door on this new era of Love Bytes, and I am so excited that you are all going to be here to share it with me and my family too!
